Pros/Cons of Study Hours

Hey y'all!

I have a simple request to ask--can you give me your perspective on study hours, from your experience? I'm on our bylaws committee this semester and I've been through a year as scholarship chair so I've seen study hours through my eyes. I would like to know your take on them, having been on both sides of sitting in them and running them, and if it's worked for you.
The reason for this is that I'd like to make some changes to ours so they're more productive if we have to do them (ideally I'd like to 86 them since I didn't feel they really did anything anyways and most girls used the on-campus writing center/design lab/office hours instead of the ones we ran).
Thanks, you all are the best!

Get rid of them. They are pointless. The women who want to study will find times/places to study, and the ones who don't will sit and play around on Facebook. Nothing is going to change that.

I agree to get rid of them. I hated study hours at the house. I was the only engineer major and none of the girls could help me if I have a question. I studied a lot out of the study hour set by the acedemic chair and found that require study hours at the house where useless as I didn't really study.

In the post-university world of work, you will often find that strong managers will often set objectives for their teams and how the individuals attain their objectives (legally and within budget, of course) is up to them. It can be the same for the minimum/target GPA objective.

That said, you might want to consider encouraging small study groups (same class/major) for the chapter or Panhellenic (like an English lit or marketing study group) where afterwards the group can go get coffe/snacks. That can build sisterhood and Panhellenic relations as well as academics.

I agree with the above posters. People who want to study will make that happen. As someone who didn't need to be watched but went to study hours anyways, it was a write-off. I didn't get anything done, and ended up studying on my own. At most I would ask if there is anyone interested in a study group, and go from there.
