I always love the "but where did that name come from" and you break down the legal name to show the nickname. Mine isn't that hard to figure out. It's similar to a girl name Jordan having the nickname of Dani. Jordan to Dan to Danny/Dani.
Like Lorelai and Rory. I had to look that one up because for years, I didn't get it.

You know, I used to babysit for a Liam. It never occurred to me that his real name might be William. I haven't spoken to that family in years but now I'm tempted to e-mail the mother and ask.

I have heard of people naming their boys Liam - not William, just Liam. I gave all my children names which could be shortened - none of them went by nicknames until #4. Guess I was just tired!

Well, Liam is an Irish Gaelic form of William (or Uilliam), much like Sean and Seamus are the Irish Gaelic forms of John and James, so I think it is a fairly common Irish name. (Think Liam Neeson.)
We have a Liam (about 10 yrs. old) in the extended family. My sister married into a huge Irish family; for holidays they often rent a hall because no other place can hold all the cousins & their kids.
His father shortens it to "Lee" - so we have "Jackson and Lee".

Sounds like my family...only we don't rent anywhere. If we all have to get together, we go to my uncle's place because he has a lot of land. All the elders sit inside and the other 3/4 of us all sprawl outside.
