Moons ago, I always knew it was time to return to college when our local PBS station aired the yearly drum-and-bugle competitions. California teams with many props often won.

The weather is usually pretty good, my last tour in 2010 we only had rain once.

I'm a huge fan of the Santa Clara Vanguard (of California). California is a hotspot for the activity, with so many high caliber bands and corps.
