I think membership reviews are far more damaging.

I agree. Oftentimes membership reviews cut numbers enough to cripple a chapter beyond recovery. Metrics aside, the fraternity can only expel them from membership, not the university, and those jilted members become a cancer to the group as it tries to rebuild.

Here is a question for you guys. Why do you do it? Why is hazing so important to you that you will risk being kicked out and your chapter destroyed rather than not haze? You see stories like this over and over again and I still can't figure this out.

Are these hypotheticals?

Interesting. I never looked at it that way. That is a very fair point.

Tradition. Also a bit of "We had to do it, so so do they."

ETA: I do not see anything that appears Earpish in this thread.

Exactly. And if they expel the more popular members - which quite often is the case - those guys often become a de facto underground fraternity (i.e. "the real XYZ") that overshadows the actual chapter.

I think that GLOs do this so they can keep their noses clean with the uninvolved (but still donating) alumni/ae. "We didn't close the chapter. WE TRIED. We kept the best people around and just got rid of the troublemakers!" When a lot of times...they damn well know the end result will be the same. It really depends how large the school is. A membership review at anything smaller than a state flagship is, IMO, pretty pointless.

Don't be surprised if you see another article about membership reviews coming out of Auburn U, our Omega chapter. It was tweeted a while back by John Holloway, our national director of chapter services that reviews and alumni control boards were coming for USC, LSU, and Auburn.

These underground "real XYZ" groups don't last very long. Without a chapter house to recruit new members the die out as the current members graduate.

Fixed your post.

Even at some campi like that, it depends what the student body wants, who the expelled members are and how students look at the "transgressions" committed. Beating someone unconscious? They'll be gone in a year. Serving hard liquor when only beer is permitted? Look for them to outlive the "official" chapter.

Lots of luck trying to recruit new members to an unrecognized and unhoused local at an SEC school after being kicked out of your local chapter of a national fraternity no matter how cool everyone thinks you are.

Not remotely true. There is a very infamous underground chapter at a major California school that not only continues to recruit, but they steal rushees from even the most competitive chapters.

Misread title...

Unfortunately I misread the thread title as
"USC (SC) Lambda Chi Alpha HQ Outs Most of Chapter Members" and was surprised that a National HQ would care these days...
