EXACTLY. People outside of PA. make this mistake all the time. Although Penn is in the name, Penn State and UPenn are NOT state universities. They are not part of the 14 state university system of PA. which are public and offer a great education that's very affordable compared to the many other colleges and universities in PA.

Since you brought up U Penn, I'll mention that it's not state related at all - kind of the same deal, I believe, as USC (a private school that just happens to have the state's name in its name).

Exactly. I am a huge advocate of the PA state school system; they are governed really well. I am a graduate of one and attended two. In PA., these schools are very popular and known for offering a great education that's affordable.

Well said, rhoyaltempest. I'd just add that Penn State, while not inexpensive, is -- on paper at least -- much lower-cost than Penn. Actual costs for an individual / family of course may vary wildly depending on scholarships, Pell grants, and so on.
