Why not call them pledges? "New members" makes it sound like they're already initiated. And also, why is it not PC to call it Rush anymore? "Recruitment" sounds like we're in the military. I think they were changed primarily due to public perception. Trying to change the way people view sororities, make them more "up to date" and "professional" with how college women are now, and generally be more politically correct. It also tied in with shortening pledge periods and changing the pledging process.
Personally, I dislike the terms and have decided if I'm typing here at GC and I want to use pledge and rush... I'm just going to do it. The other ones are so incredibly awkward.
And I really dislike PC with a passion.
