Unique is one of the words my 10th grade English teacher wouldn't allow us to use, unless whatever we were discussing was ACTUALLY unique. Unique =/= unusual.
You being smarter than everyone you know doesn't make you unique.
You not knowing any alums (or that they are alums more likely) doesn't make you unique.
You being the first daughter of the US and you're going through rush doesn't even make you unique. But at least that DOES make your situation unusual. But wouldn't we have fun giving advice in that scenario?
- "my Dad is POTUS and I'm trying to figure out how to go through rush with my secret service detail. Any suggestions?" HA!

"I just didn't connect with their philanthropy." I don't care about those people with that problem. Yawn, why did you pick that?
Yeah, cuz there are so many causes supported by NPC groups that are just trivial.

"Do they call mothers first about the bids" - I am a heli mommy and do not understand that my adult daughter is the one going through recruitment.

Well, there are girls out there who are uncomfortable with the elderly or little children or people with disabilities or women talking about their domestic violence experiences. That doesn't make them bad people. If one of those girls go to a party and the sisters are talking about how they go volunteer at the {insert philanthropy here} 3 times a week (whether it's true or not) yes, that will put some girls off.
In other words, they might not so much "not care" as their own discomfort would make them not a good fit (and saying you "don't connect" is probably a better euphemism).
The best way to prevent that from happening is to make it clear during rush that there are all kinds of ways to support your GLO's philanthropy.

I don't buy it. Most groups support their philanthropies with massive fundraising programs. Not connecting is more likely the fact that some of the groups philantrophy choices are a little less "sexy" than others. I also don't recall saying that any of this made them "bad people." It probably makes them a little clueless.

I agree with you. As a former Executive Director for the Arthritis Foundation, I can verify that it is a harder "ask" than those fundraising for women's or children's charities. It's true, but I'm not sure much of that translates into which sorority you pick.

Cool. I didn't know that about you. I don't know how much philanthropy day plays into the decision of which chapter a woman chooses, either. Really, it should just give a woman an idea of how philanthropic the group really is. If a group barely talks about philanthropy, than maybe they don't do much. It doesn't really matter what the actual philanthropy is. Are you really going to kill yourself everytime you have to raise money for old people or help women in need or help patients with kidney disease? Kids aren't the only people who need help. Is arthritis a worthy cause only if it hurts children?

Jenna did it. Barbara went to Yale.
I am sure it was hard to explain to the chapters at UT that still had sleeping porches.

RE: Rushing while dad is POTUS (President of the United
States)
Linda Byrd Johnson may have, also -- the Zetas might know the status of this. I know she had Secret Service agents with her while she was a member (at UT Austin?). I remember hearing stories about this.

As did Lynda Bird Johnson. The secret service had their own rooms in the UT-Austin ZTA house.

My daughter was cut/dropped/released from all chapters/her legacy chapter(s) and she's absolutely perfect in every way!
Translation: Your daughter had no desire to join a sorority/legacy sorority and instead of telling you that she decided to blame it on us, and really released herself from recruitment.

Sorry, I didn't mean to imply you did. I more meant that they might be worried a sorority would think that of them if they actually said "babies scare the crap oiut of me."
Like I said, I think my example is more if the group says they are doing *hands on* philanthropy on a regular basis. One of our philanthropies is Special Olympics, and there are chapters who do very little if nothing as far as fundraising for it, but are at every SO event within a 40 mile radius as volunteers.

Are you implying that Barbara would not have needed secret service when she rushed?

No, she's saying Barbara didn't rush.
