I'm a little about people giving actual credit for this to Obama. He happened to be dealt a royal flush, nothing was really of his own doing.
Either way, I'm also a little squicked out by people celebrating his death. Even my Pastor's wife was Facebooking about it. She was proud because apparently it was the Navy that took him out, and her.son is currently enrolled at Annapolis.
Also, my Pastor had coincidentally (or not so much when you consider the Holy Spirit) chosen yesterday for a sermon on the Revelation/end-times. Interesting stuff, especially when he taught on the Muslim version.

I know there is a little level of sarcasm with your post but I will give the President his due (even as I am a firm opponent of his policies). He made the correct decision and was in command of the groups who organized this. Way to go President Obama and his team!
On the DNA questions it is my understanding that they are performing tests and an autopsy may have been performed before burial. Also, I believe there will be pics leaking out eventually. He is definitely dead. For the President to come out on TV and make an announcement that was not verified would be political suicide.
As a great statesman once said "Boom! Winning!

As you should be. The level of joyful celebration throughout the country misses the bigger picture and is, quite frankly, a little embarrassing.

I frankly have to agree with both of you. It makes me think of crowds in the middle East doing the same that make us cringe. Apparently we are unable to see the parallels.

Sorry, but I disagree completely.
This is a definite milestone in our war on terror. This rivals the fall of the Axis powers in WW II in importance to the American psyche. Is the "war on terror" over? No. But we have taken a huge step and a message has been sent. You can run and you can hide but not forever.
A mass murderer is dead, celebrations are in order?

So you honestly believe that we are safer today than we were a week ago?

I know this wasn't directed at me, but we were most definitely safer a week ago than we are today.

We have, at long last, proven that if you go after us, we will go after you and we will not quit until we succeed. Sometimes that message is an important one to send.
Does that make us safer? It is the core of a solid defense strategy. If people believe that they can attack us without consequence, then they will be more likely to attack us. We would be seen as weak in the eyes of many. Being seen as strong does make us safer.

I agree. Which is why I don't believe that any of the celebration is about anything but vengeance.

We have most assuredly not succeeded in the "War on Terror".

There is no problem with celebrating Justice. There's a difference between justice as a punishment and a means to preventing OBL planned future attacks. You know there would have been more with him acting as the mastermind.
Nope, we haven't succeeded, and I'm not sure we ever will. I think we will never see the end of the War on Terror. However a major battle was won over 24 hours ago. That is something to be proud of. Proud of our service men and women, and proud of our President who said "DO IT" without letting Pakistan even know. The War on Terror would not be needed were it not for extremists. It's a proactive offense in order to prevent future 9/11-like events. Should we sit back on our haunches and do nothing? I think not.

I've yet to hear anybody make that claim. If anything, we can expect an insurgence in terror activity. That doesn't mean that, in the long run, this was not a strategic and good move. I think it's unfortunate that we didn't take him alive, but getting him was important politically and militarily.
And to AOPi Angel, Thousands of people have lost their lives across 3 different decades because of this man, not just Americans but people from all over the world. Comparing his death to a solitary murderer who receives the death penalty is apples and oranges in my book, and I'm vehemently against the death penalty.

Absolutely. UBL was not a leader but he was a figure head in which the terrorist rallied around. A dead figure head for a murderous terrorist group is a great thing. We simply cannot cower in fear as to what these people plan to do to us. They would do it anyway. Every terrorist we kill makes us one dead terrorist safer. The alternative is to capitulate and bow to their whims and demands. That isn't going to happen. Some things are just worth fighting for.

It already has. See: patriot act, TSA, etc. See also: cutting badly-needed social programs in order to fund wars.

This is a total non sequiter. Equating the killing of a terrorist to cutting social programs leaves one speechless. One of the main purpose of our Federal Government is for the common defense. Sorry but social programs et al are way down the list.
It is a big bad world out there and there are people who wish to do us harm. They don't care if it is you and your family or me and my family. Had you been on the 89th floor or above in WTC South you would be dead now and they wouldn't care less. The terrorist are only interested in destroying our way of life and us with it. The alternative is to capitulate and bow down to their ideology.

That's all I could think about when reading everyone's FB status updates and watching his speech on the news. It was the MILITARY and I'd like to see proof. I think it was PIKA2001 that brought up about the Hussein brothers-I can tell you that I know, for a fact, they were def. killed because I was literally stationed 2 blocks down from where their bodies were. So, I'm not sure about the GC on showing pictures...hmmmm....
