I believe it's leftover from typing typing (like, on a typewriter). Something about how if you only used one space, the way the period would go onto the paper was wonky and you needed to use two to signify the end of a sentence. Now that we're into computers and it's much more apparent what the end of a sentence is, only one is necessary, but I find myself using two all the time.

Even typing this little blurb with only one space between period and new sentence is proving difficult.

This.

Once I started using a computer for all my reports and stuff in middle/high school I was taught to use one space after a period. AP (Associated Press) style is one space, so that's what we use at work. But for older people in my business, it's a hard habit to break - you often find press releases written by people 38+ have two spaces because that was the standard when they started in the business.

I've been putting two spaces behind periods and one space behind other punctuation marks for 20+ years. I won't stop now.
