Our pledges are allowed to wear letters, as long as they are less than 4" in height. Pins are not allowed to be worn until after their initiation.

I'd imagine it's so that fat pledges (who need to wear XL shirts) can't taint their reputation with hugely-visible letters...

My guess is because 4" is the "typical" size of a block lettered shirt, and if they have to let new members wear letters (stupid HQ!), they need to find some other way to demean the new members?
