Yeah, we tried a dress check this past fall and our VPCR didnt really emphasize how important it was so many of our girls didnt show up to have their clothing checked. that brings me to another point, which is off topic of pref night, my chapter has a big issue with showing up to mandatory events. im not sure if its lack of motivation or what but last summer at our RTS's (recruitment training) we only had about 7 of our 20ish girls at the most show up. 2 of us were still new members because we were held over from the spring. any ideas on how to motivate girls to come to these events?

For my chapter, training like that is mandatory, so not going = a fine (except for emergencies). It sucks to have to enforce the fines (I believe it's VPO who notifies people and VPF who actually collects) but it has to be done. If I were in your position, I would try talking to the VPMD (for mediation), or the President (she should be able to help by talking to whomever). Or, if you have an open relationship with your advisors, you could try talking to them, see what they've done in situations like these. Try explaining it to the girls who are missing the training like this: If you aren't trained for recruitment, how can you help your chapter in recruitment?
And for other mandatory events, explain why they're mandatory. It's usually not just for the hell of it, but sometimes people forget that.
Sorry, I'm a little confused- how come you're planning recruitment if you're VPCR? Or did your chapter amalgamate VP Recruitment and VP Campus Relations?

Pardon my crash, pertinent thread...

I personally like the suggestion one poster had about business suits. Being from a sorority that has red and white as our colors, I can totally relate to some people just looking like crap in red, depending on coloring and/or body type.

In my chapter, we are fined for missing mandatory events. Girls were only excused from work week if they had a damn good reason. This works because notice is given far in advance. In the case of work week (which is an extended rush workshop, and includes a dress check) notice is given months in advance. And fining generally works. Even if they begrudge being there because they have to be, they're there. It's usually not hard to get them into a good mood as long as they show up in the first place.

Remind your actives that recruitment is the lifeblood of the chapter. If they don't recruit well, the chapter won't thrive. You don't need just quantity but quality and that takes work. They NEED to practice conversations, rotations, decorations...whatever you use for recruitment. It's not your job to recruit girls alone (or the VPR's). And point out that these work shops can be fun and can also be a great opportunity to bond. Many times girls that haven't been around much the previous semester for whatever reason find that these events help them reconnect with the chapter. Make sure to use more positive reinforcement than negative (for example, it's obviously more desirable to have girls showing up because they want to than because they can't afford a fine...be upbeat and compliment them on what they're doing right) and try to include some downtime for girls to enjoy themselves. For instance, during an all day workshop have a 2 hour break for a pizza lunch and games. Your donuts and prize idea is great. Things like that are morale boosters.

You might also consider talking to your EC about eliminating the option to work off fines. My chapter also had that option and we had the same problem as yours...people would rather clean the chapter room at the end of the semester than show up to required events. The actives I know tell me that since fines are now set in stone, members take them more seriously. Fines shouldn't be over used...if a girl has a valid excuse (sick, genuine car trouble, family emergency, that sort of thing vs. homework she forgot to do, tired, forgot to ask off work), she doesn't need to pay. But those who aren't pulling their weight sometimes need a little reminder to get back in the game.
