She doesn't seem to be a helicopter mom, considering he's still in HS. Don't we always tell the high school students to enjoy their high school years and work on keeping grades/involvement up?
OP - as long as you're just doing preliminary research and NOT living vicariously through your son, he should be fine. Encourage him to look for some of the answers on his own when he has time.
