I just read a list last week of the Top Ten businesses which werethisclose to filing for bankruptcy protection, and unfortunately, Borders was one of them. The husband of one of my best friends in the manager at our local Borders. 
I'm trying to remember the name of one that I used to love, in the DC area - was it Crown Books? Something like that - it was the first mega-bookstore I had ever seen!

I swear, I was there everytime I was within 5 miles! Nothing especially fancy, just miles of books & literature!

Although I don't have a Nook (I have a Kindle), I love Barnes and Noble. I like the feel of the store and the way that is is normally laid out. I have always preferred B&N to Borders. I think it feels more comfortable, but I am pretty sure that I was raised mostly on B&N. I remember going there with my dad and going to the kids sections and bringing a stack of books to their little tables and reading them.

^^^ I upgraded because of the perpetual free shipping on Borders.com. Sometimes I only want one thing and I'm more likely to get it if I don't have to pay for shipping.

I'm still bothered by the idea of Nooks and Kindles. Cringe.
At the same time, I used to cringe at the idea of dictionaries and encyclopedias online. Now it's so prevalent that print dictionaries and encyclopedias are practically extent. Sad but inevitable.

I had a BN membership, but having moved from a city with a BN to one with only a Waldenbooks I'm thinking of switching. BN changed up its membership before Borders did and now I think they basically give the same benefits.

There is actually a used book store in downtown Fayetteville that beats out both Barnes and Borders. It's used books to the ceiling of the store, with walls that are primarily only book shelves. It goes aways back. Always go there, especially for rare books.

I guess for me, it doesn't really matter. I enjoy both book stores, but I don't get into the rewards thingies that they have. I don't visit them that often.

It was one of those Yahoo! Top Ten lists last week, but I can't seem to find it this week. But there are several articles on Borders & bankruptcy, sadly.

If any of you bibliophiles are ever in Boston, take a trip to the New England Mobile Book Fair http://www.nebookfair.com/ in Newton, MA. It's only about a mile or so inside Rte 128 in Newton Highlands and well worth the trip. It's strictly utilitarian (no comfy chairs or cafe) and the books are arranged by publsiher, but they always seem to have an excellent selection of everything.

Initially, I didn't like the idea either. I love books. I have loved them since I was a kid. Heck, I would spend my spare change on books and I can easily spend several hours in a bookstore. I began to consider an e-reader once I began traveling for my job. At one point, I had 8 books in my hotel and had read 7 of them. I didn't want to keep lugging books around. I bought the Nook & I love it. I still get all of the books I love, and I can carry them in one. There's no longer a need to find shelf space for them, and I can take it anywhere. For those who truly love reading, I believe it is a purchase to consider.
