Banks and people who have been removed from the homes that they "owned" may see it as more than a technicality.
You are paying mortgage so that you can own it one day (some jokingly call this "rent to own" because they see the bank as the leasing office). It is yours barring certain circumstances. My parents own their home (the actual house and not the property) because they have lived in it for over 40 years and finished paying the mortgage many moons ago.
