It's all a matter of what things you were privy to. I certainly wasn't sheltered and clueless about the things around me. Still, it isn't ridiculous to expect for children to be children and adults to be adults. My parents talked to me and around me and I heard things about different topics, but they didn't constantly sit around gossiping about their friends' lives; talking about all of their issues with their friends and family with me (
as Danielle did when she told her friends how much she loathed the other women--meanwhile, the girls' faces looked like "okay...thanks for sharing...."); or taking me along for the ride for every adult/marital issue. That isn't about educating your kids and keeping them aware, that's about venting and soapboxing. Find someplace else to vent and soapbox. Not to mention that kids have a tendency to make their parents' problems their own and find a way to blame themselves for whatever's going on.
