Or just think about this.
Here you're representing your GLO, so please think ahead with what you would say. My respect towards some GLO here dropped drastically, just because some of their members don't know how to respect other people.
Chill out! Have fun!

The reason I made the "flashing neon pop-up" statement about using search is not because I have a problem with topics being re-discussed, but because if a user (new or old) had searched this topic and seen that is has been overly discussed and was also a sore subject amoung some, perhaps that user might have thought twice about bringing it up for the ump-teenth time.

Another way to look at the situation...

I'm sure many of us consider our GLOs like a family. It may be okay for you to make fun of your family or complain about your family, but if someone else were to say something about your family it would no longer be funny. That's how many people feel about this topic.

Dionysus, I agree. I find Kappastargirl equally degrading. Especially lying and saying I was "cursing" at the moderators. Maybe you dont' like my viewpoint but we are all allowed to disagree. I don't think you losing respect for my sorority because I choose to argue a valid point makes any sense. I am not attacking people that didn't first attack me and then erase it. I am trying to say it is stupid to get upset over nicknames, and if you dont' like the nicknames you shouldn't get angry with the people who view them as funny and harmless.

Of course we are all allowed to disagree. But to beat the dead horse one more time, there is a respectful way to disagree--and then there's what you are doing. Telling people to get a life and calling them annoying is not a way to win brownie points around here. I'm actually embarrassed for you because it seems that you don't have the good sense to be embarrassed for yourself.

BTW, the only erasing of posts that I've seen on this thread are you editing your posts. I would be very careful if I were you about calling KappaStarGirl a liar. She's a friend of mine, and she happens to be a very sharp cookie. As far as I'm concerned, her opinion is right on the money and I agree with every word of it.

Maybe that's what you're trying to say, but you sure have an odd way of trying to get that across. When you purposely provoke people, you have no right to complain when its turned back around on you.

*sighs* We've been off topic for two pages now. *sighs again*

Either we need to get back on topic or lock this thread.

EVERYONE has their faults. Also, EVERYONE has made valid points.

Thumbs down

I say lock it. If you feel that it's absolutely, positively necessary to continue this discussion, it'd probably be best to choose the other threads to continue. There's SIX to choose from.

This thread makes me feel sad.
I say let's just all try to be a little nicer to each other. Most people don't want to read these bad nicknames for their beloved GLOs. Most people don't like to be 'called out' in front of a group of people even if it is in cyberspace. When someone feels defensive, the natural reaction is to lash out so let's try to avoid putting each other on the defensive. Have a good night and a kinder and gentler GC.

Just b/c you can say anything doesn't mean you should. I agree that these types posts have negative effects, you have no idea how many PNMs wonder these boards.

This all happend last summer as well...

people in glass houses shouldn't throw stones.

and i don't think anyone, anywhere has ever not made fun of something or themselves.

As for PNM's reading these threads...what? you don't think they aren't going to hear any of this the first day they get to campus? c'mon!

and my last point is this....we are sitting here talking on a MESSAGE BOARD! this means, you don't really know the person on the other side of the internet, for all you know there could be a GC'er out there who isn't who he/she claims to be or even if they are affiliated with an organization. So who cares really that much if someone has a nickname for something else?

Wouldn't it be nice if PNM's didn't hear this sort of thing the moment they step on campus? The only way to prevent that from happening is to stop spreading the nicknames. That's the only way that they will die out.

GreekChat is a great way to get an idea across to Greeks all over the country -- and that's why I have been so vocal about the negative effects that these nicknames have on GLOs. If people would take that message to heart, then perhaps we could start ridding campuses of the nicknames once and for all. I'm not saying that we can stop it completely tomorrow, but we've got to start somewhere.

Here's what gets me. When I went through rush 30 years ago, my mother--who was raised next to the U. of Arkansas campus--told me all these same nicknames for the same groups. I remember that my father looked up from his paper and commented that they were the same nicknames he'd heard when he rushed in 1941.

They just never seemed that funny or inventive--for instance, substitute "krappa" for any "kappa" in a group's name, etc. Ha. Ha.

I think a separate thread about negative nicknames would be a good idea. This thread was started at point and skipped all points relevant to it's intended direction or destination.

Being that this turned into a nasty mud slinging, I don't think starting another thread is a good idea. If someone is interested in the nicknames, they can consult the other threads mentioned on the first page.

Now that's hilarious, I can't imagine people using names like "Katcha Katcha Gonorrhea" back in the 1940's when my grandparents were children.
