I thought it was a general rant, anyway.

You either think abortion is a viable alternative for people (if done within the legal and medical restrictions) or you don't. If you do, that's pro-abortion as far as I'm concerned. Being pro-abortion doesn't mean you're going against your religion, femininity, or any of that other stuff that attempts to control people's bodies.

Since we're on the subject, it seems to be normal in Bulgaria, too: http://www.nydailynews.com/news/worl...r_wedding.html. Now, THAT'S a sad story.

In regard to having babies young (not talking about conset right now, but the practice in general), how did something so horrifying become so common? Or is it just horrifying to us because we've made it uncommon?
Is IS horrifying. Just the other day there was a story all over the news about a 13-year-old girl in Yemen who died after having sex with her (much) older husband shortly after they were married: http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20100410/...en_child_bride

Then there's this: http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2009/...n5307092.shtml

And this: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/middle_east/7351336.stm

Just because it happens doesn't make it right.

You should correctly identify it. She bled to death after being tied up and raped by her husband. It isn't that she was a too young wife having sex with a much older man.

She died of internal bleeding, and she's not the only girl that has happened to. My point was that girls that young - even if they've technically reached puberty - have bodies that are still maturing and not necessarily fully capable of handling sex, let alone a pregnancy and birth.

More importantly, she was tied up and raped and that goes waaaaaay beyond body maturity.

I thought of this thread when I heard 2 separate groups of kids, 1 group of 6th graders and another group of 7th graders talking about how "lame" it is that so-and-so were virgins. The things that came out of these 11 and 12 year olds was CRAZY!! How open they were about the sex they were having and such was shocking!

I'm going to pray that they were all actually virgins and everything they said was a bluff to sound cool.

Yes, I know that is incredibly improbable.

Right? I was thinking of that too, and then my next thought was "wow, if this 12 yr old is lame....I must be SUPER lame!" lol

So must I

But seriously, this is proof of why sex education needs to be brought back into the schools. Obviously the parents aren't doing it at home.

I know some teachers are like "we have too much to do as it is" and don't get me wrong, I do, but as a leader for the next generation, I have to be aware that some parents out there just shouldn't be parents. We are in the "entitled" generation and the parents just give in and want to be their child's friend. They need to learn and be aware.

I started getting sex education in 4th grade. In high school, I had a great teacher who not only preached abstinence but said "if you're gonna have sex be safe and here is how you can be safe". But I was also the generation where AIDS was on the forefront of the news, so most of the high schoolers with me, were absolutely TERRIFIED of getting AIDS (as they rightly should be). Unfortunately now, AIDS cases are increasing as awareness is dying off. But sex education has gone the way of the dinosaur.

That's really sad. There are so many horrifying circumstances that can happen before/during our lives that therapy can't heal. It is ALWAYS tragic and heartbreaking. Yet somehow, we do heal (to the best of our ability) and most learn to survive, some of us even find it in ourselves to thrive. We can spout these statements here, but I doubt any of you walk up to any one of these incredibly resilient survivors, look into his or her eyes and say "it would have been better if you hadn't been born."

HELL to the YEAH

I think we all agree that an abortion can't (legally) happen this late in the game, so this is all hypothetical. She could be traumatized from being "forced" (assuming she doesn't want to keep it) to carry this baby but she can be traumatized after being "forced" (assuming she wanted to keep it) to go through an abortion. She'll have emotional scars from both giving up the baby and from raising it before she's ready. Some say she could die in "childbirth." Okay well due to her small pelvis, she'd probably need a C-section and the risk of death in that is about equal to the risk of death during a second-trimester abortion. She and the baby are currently healthy, but both a second trimester abortion and a C-section can lead to infection/sepsis, internal organ damage, bleeding out, and a crap load of other things that can lead to infertility. Can you imagine either becoming infertile while birthing a product of your rape or becoming infertile after ending the life of the one child you could ever have?

I can't even say what I'd like to see happen because, let's face it, this poor girl is screwed on all sides--I agree with DP in that she needs to be in therapy until she's 100. But for nearly every argument on one side, the same applies to the other side. I'm praying she has/will have a lot of support because she's going to need it.
I will note that you're assuming the same quality of health care in whatever part of Mexico that she is in is the same as the quality of health care here. I suppose that applies to abortion too though.
