I just happened on this site by accident and found it so interesting, having been in a sorority a few years ago myself. It's sad that this attitude still haunts rushees and sisters nationwide. My campus had a relatively large greek system and, coming from a small town, I was a little intimidated. During rush my freshman year, I cut all the houses I heard "sucked" or weren't any good for whatever reason. I saved 2 "elite houses" for pref night, and guess what -- I got cross cut. I didn't figure out what happened until I was a rush counselor a few years later. Anyway, the next year I rushed again with a new attitude and chose a house new on campus that didn't yet have a reputation. We didn't have a fancy house and ended up years later not being one of the "elite." But now after I've graduated, I'm happy with my choice because I've remained friends with so many of them, despite distance. I guess I wouldn't have fit into one of the so-called "elite" sororities -- I've met many of their members over the years and have found so many to be shallow and overly-concerned with their reputations and presence. What's important about sorority life is the acceptance, independence, group activities, self-esteem, motivation, togetherness ... I could go on and on. My sisters are doctors, CPAs, consultants, Olympians, along my me -- the lawyer, and I owe a lot of my success to those years in the sorority. Be mature and honest in your evaluation and decisions regarding those sororities.
