The following doesn't make any comment about the quality of the teams, the performances, or the judges:
I wonder if there would be the same negative reaction if a non-BGLO sorority had merely placed or even done badly in the competition.
I guess I'm asking if the reactions are such because 1) a non-BGLO group actually won, or 2) a non-BLGO even participated.
While we're at it, how would GC BGLO members feel if Latina-, or Asian- (South or East Asian), or multiculturally-oriented GLO's had participated, placed, or won? What if it was a non-BGLO team, but the actual dancers were African-American and/or of other minorities? I swear I think one of the ZTA girl looks African-American or at least multiracial.
Side note - My school now has 2 step/stroll shows during homecoming: 1) the long-running NHPC-only show, and 2) more recently, they've started doing a show with joint teams of NHPC, MCGLO's, and NPC. I remember AlphaPhi + Alpha Phi Alpha (how perfect!) and Lambda Theta Alpha + Phi Mu (winners in 2008).

I think the rub is how Sprite marketed it.

Chuckling at the references to the 90s. But I love y'all. BTW, I was one of the "step"masters of my collegiate chapter, too. We were called dance leaders.

You were called dance leaders because you all weren't "stepping" like it is called now. We are referencing the 90s because the 80s-90s is when "stepping" as a BGLO artform (as many people know it today) began to really take shape and get more widespread appeal.

Duh, that's my point. But between the comments here, on FB, etc., you have folx bemoaning on one hand that we don't step like we did in the 90s. Then on the other hand you have those critical of ZTA, because of their taking steps from the 90s.

 Duh, me.
I noticed the bolded. I think that has to do with the type of group in question. A BGLO team that consciously says "we're taking it back to the 1990s...let's go back into OUR stepping vault" would get props from those of us who like that. Except for the Matrix because I always hated Matrix themes. A non-BGLO team that was taught how to step by a BGLO sorority and seemingly copies a bunch of old steps looks more like "as seen on youtube...we're on some brand new isht!!! we're doing big thangs!!! yay us!!!!"
