There are discussions around here that the government wasted somewhere around 100 million dollars just in calling off work last week. Ridiculous. And after an hour-long flurry yesterday afternoon that didn't even stick to the ground, the gov't was delayed 2 hours today.

Now, I'm originally from the snowbelt and am used to big storms, so I know I'm biased. But come on.

On another note, anyone make it to the Dupont snowball fight?? I tried to walk to the corner of my street a few days ago and literally almost blew over a couple of times. I walked into Marvin's looking like I had just spent a week outside in the Arctic Circle.

I got downtown this morning and there are lots of invisible ice patches, places where snow still hasn't been properly shoveled and so on...now for those that are complaining about the money that was wasted last week knew about or dealt with the train derailment on the Red line last Friday ?

This area is not used to dealing with this kind of snow on the regular. This is not Colorado.

The OPM announcement for today's delayed opening occurred when we were at a Scout meeting. A bunch of the parents who are fed employees/AD military reacted the same way the boys do when they hear school has a 2-hour delay. One of the ASMs said a fellow employee said it took 4 1/2 hours to travel from Manassas to downtown DC last Friday.

Rumor has it that FCPS is going to have delayed openings all week.

Not this year, but the past two we've had days where the government shot down locally, and the University makes heavy suggestions to allow staff, faculty, and students go home early or be excused due to the weather, and this is North Idaho. I made the conscious decision to live in town, downtown even, so I could always get to work and school on foot but there are people who live far enough out they cannot safely make it.

Other than the government I think businesses need to do an analysis on their own of staffing to provide services while considering safety of employees. I had one job where we were super organized and had a phone tree and ride board, and I remember one snow I couldn't get my car out because of the morons who abandoned their vehicles in the street and parking lot, not because I am incapable of clearing and operating a vehicle in the snow. Since we had a plan in effect those of us who could physically walk to an intersection or other pick up point would, and managers and supervisors arranged for pick up with coworkers or did it on their own. Since it was a retail shop we felt it was important to be open for the community and without knowing who had vehicles, kids or elderly parents to care for, and school canceled (high school and college students) it wouldn't have been possible to adequately staff the store and prepare for deliveries of grocery essentials. Thankfully we were near paved walking trails/bike paths and a (which citizens cleared) and a bus route and those who needed essentials could get to the store with their sleds or on the bus.

Everyone who pitched in during snow emergencies got overtime as well as personal time for the future and it really was good PR after the pharmacy stocked Plan B and we were labeled baby killers.
