I think it really depends on the campus culture. If Greek life isn't a huge thing at your school, Facebook can be a good advertising tool. I think an event page is a better idea than the ads are. Some schools don't have a great organized office of Greek life where potential members can get information about informal recruitment events. I agree that it can look tacky if it is done the wrong way.

Whenever my chapter did informal recruitment, we said that each sister had to invite # of people (one or two, usually) to the event. You could have sisters do that on a Facebook event, cause it seems like everyone has FB.
