Actually, "It's A Wonderful Life" has been playing once or twice per year for about 15 years now. The only reason I know this is because it's one of my mom's favorite movies of all time. She was sad when
NBC bought the rights to showing the movie, because instead of being able to catch one of the multiple showings, she had to make sure that she found out it was showing so she didn't miss it. (That's right, I dug up an article from 1995!) We eventually bought the tape, and then DVD, so it's no problem anymore! I remember when NBC first bought the rights, it was only shown once per season, but according to
this 2009 Christmas movie guide, NBC is showing it twice this year.
Now, Elf...THAT is in overplayed Christmas movie! (But I still love it...
