I think it's for the best. I don't know how "satisfying" (not sure if that's the right word) a trial would be. If he was remorseless, you would hate him even more -- if he was remorseful, you would conclude that he was insincere. If he went to jail, he would eventually get out, and be free to resume his life (albeit, travel and employment prospects would be dampered / hindered by a murder conviction).
It's cruel and awful, brutish and short, but I think that this was probably a suitable outcome, short of her family having the satisfaction of offing him themselves.
