Quota question - please help!!

Okay so I rushed a sorority this summer, which shall remain nameless, that I really do not like. Recently I found out that another sorority that I loved did not make quota and is inviting those girls who did not get bids to join (like a snap bid kind of, but not exactly).

So, I was wondering if there was any way that I could get out of my sorority (I have not been initiated yet) and join that one??

Would other girls hate me if I could do this and did do this??

Please help!

IIRC from hearing all the NPC ladies on this site, if you accept a bid, you can't accept another for a whole calender year.

No. My school had a rule that no bids could be issued during breaks, and that included summer. I'm not sure if that's an NPC unanimous agreement.

Emma, if both sororities in question are NPC, the answer is no. If you sign a pref card during formal recruitment, and you are matched, you are bound to that sorority for one calendar year. If you receive a bid through COB and pledge, you are bound to that sorority for one calendar year. (If you receive a bid through COB and do not pledge, you are not bound.)

From what you're saying, it sounds like you accepted a COB to an NPC sorority, and you are still a new member. If this is the case, you can depledge, and you can pursue membership in another NPC sorority, but you must wait one year before doing so.

If you depledge from your current sorority, you are not eligible to receive a bid from another sorority for ONE calendar year.

So, you can leave your sorority if you have not been initiated, but you would not be able to join another for a year.

So you wouldn't be able to accept another bid until NEXT spring or summer.

What the other posters have said is correct - if you depledge, you will not be able to receive a bid for a year (assuming both these groups are NPC). So you would not be able to depledge and immediately COB the group you like better.

Things to consider: (saying that makes me feel like Dwight Schrute)

1. I have no idea what campus you're on or how competitive it is. However, think long and hard and REALISTICALLY about whether you think you could get a bid from the group you like better, a year from now. If already you went through recruitment and they cut you, they're not likely to offer you a bid the second time around unless something has drastically changed. If you leave the group you're in now, and you're on a competitive campus, rushing again as an upperclassman may yield even fewer options than you had as a freshman - and the group you depledged will probably not want you back. Your current group could be your only chance of being Greek.

2. It doesn't look great to the other sororities that you depledged another group before Initiation, especially if it comes to light that you did it because you thought you had a better option. They would likely be wondering what better option may come along when you're pledging them - basically, your track record doesn't show a lot of loyalty. Pledging a sorority shouldn't be taken lightly.

In my opinion, you should only depledge and rerush (or reCOB) if you are truly unhappy with the group you're in, and feel as though you have a pretty good shot at getting a bid at your preferred group. To be honest, I don't know if you should stick with your current group at all - if you've really and truly made an effort to get to know your sisters and get involved, and still "really do not like" the group (to the point of wanting to leave for a better offer), then initiating probably isn't going to change things. Once you initiate, you're a sister for life, and you cannot ever join another NPC sorority.

As for whether the other girls would "hate" you... I would venture to guess your current sisters would probably be pretty offended and hurt that you were leaving them for a group you decided was better than theirs. But only you can really answer that question.

I know two girls who did depledge their groups and join another a year later - however they did it not to go after another group, but because they were truly unhappy with their current group. I think that should be your main concern. Good luck with your decision!

ETA: From what the other posters are saying, it sounds like you *just* pledged. If that's the case, I would give it some more time and effort before you decide if you just can't see yourself spending the next four years with your group. You can't accept another bid right now anyway, so give it your best try and if in a few weeks you're still not feeling it, THEN consider dropping.

I think when she says "this summer" she means last week.

Which is why I'm advising her to stick with the group she's pledging and give it a chance before she drops out. If she doesn't like it by initiation time, just don't initiate. The year wait from one bid to the next is the same no matter when you depledge.

Got it. I knew that some schools hold events right before school starts. But IIRC, rushing too far in advance counts as "dirty" rushing, right?
