It's all well and good to joke about Texas laws and the thought of shooting someone just because he's there, but face reality -- that's NOT the law. There is the whole "reasonable fear for the life or safety of yourself or others" that must be proved in a court of law. Generally, both in civil court AND criminal court.

I'm specifically referencing this case which had nothing to do with
"reasonable fear for the life or safety of yourself or others" but still resulted in the neighbor getting off for killing two intruders stealing from his neighbor who was not home at the time. These kind of cases are hard for the other 49 states (even equally conservative ones like Louisiana, where I was living at the time of this case) to stomach.

Nope. Don't care at all. If two pieces of gutter trash break into my home I would be more than happy for a neighbor to deal with them.

Yeah, I can't see how this is fodder to make fun of Texans; has there been a case of "mistaken identity" where a neighbor killed the actual homeowner because he thought it was a thief?

I bet there is probably a case about it, but I would speculate that the Texans who would ACTUALLY do it, probably know their neighbors well enough to not mistake them for a thief.

If Mexico is so much better than the US than how come you don't stay put?

Anything can be fodder to make fun of Texans.

As I think I've said before, I think that law is a great idea. If my neighbor shot and killed two pieces of human filth who were robbing me, I'd bake the man (or woman) a pie.
Also, I live in Oklahoma, which is like Texas in many respects culturally. We know what our neighbors look like, so we aren't going to mistake one of them for a thief. Clearly whoever said that is not from 'round these parts.
If some law like this isn't already on the books in Oklahoma, I hope it finds its way on the books soon. I strongly believe that the liberal use of deadly force in defense of self and property is a good thing in that it accelerates human evolution.
As to the OP, racism is always bad. Immigrants, even illegal ones (sometimes) are what keeps this economy going. I think that with a few exceptions, mostly from Mexico [look at the welfare doles for evidence], the U.S. gets the best, brightest and hardest working folks from around the world. Thumb through your local yellow pages sometime and look at all of the small businesses which are obviously owned by immigrants. Pay attention to who owns the restaurants you dine in and the gas stations you fill up at.
