Exactly. The way I took it was that a fraternity is a brotherhood of men who do community service, give to philanthropy, etc. whereas a frat is what is shown in popular media. A bunch of guys who fight, haze pledges, get drunk and sleep around. I get offended if someone calls my fraternity a frat, even with the best of intentions. (No offense to those groups that refer to themselves as frats, that's just how I was educated.)

That's the same way I was taught as well.

I've noticed that a lot of stereotypes of fraternity men are the same or similar to guys that are "bros". The muscular, arrogant guys with their collars popped on the three shirts they're wearing who enjoy sports, chilling, and "bro-ing out"
