I worked in a public library for a year and now I work at a medical school library (does that count as academic or special?). So far I haven't know of anyone who hasn't called themselves those fancy terms, but I think librarian is fine.
A medical school library would count as special.

Wow. I'm glad I stumbled across this thread. I have my MLS. Got it in 2005. I worked as a media coordinator at an elementary school and a high school. Now I'm in law school.
