From what I heard, they just decided it was better for the group to focus on COBing to total, because they are now the only group below, and below by a bit. Last year at formal recruitment, of the girls that bidmatched to them, most declined. Many would SIP any other party, or drop out if kappa delta was their only group. My cousin attends there, and she says that it's not fair to them, but they are the group that happens to currently struggle with membership. Most girls would rather be GDI than Kappa Delta, and with a different informal recruitment, they've found it easier to pick up more girls without the stress of a failing formal recruitment.
By low number, she was stressing that quota her year was 63, and kappa delta only had 11 or 12 bid acceptances, and that many drop out further into the experience. They are less than a third of the average chapter size.
Panhellenic and SOME (although sadly, not all) of the sororities and even some of the fraternities are helping them out now.

I wasn't aware that you could really opt out of formal recruitment. I looked at their website which has pictures of really cute girls. I wish them the best of luck getting out of this hole...unfortunately, it never is fair.

I've heard of chapters not doing formal recruitment before, so that didn't surprise me.

Saying that, with some panhellenic help, it's a possibility. Baylor has brought chapters (including hers) back from the brink before.

I've heard of it before, but almost always before it's been of a "special interest" sorority - a sorority that traditionally caters to a particular group on campus. For example, I know of traditionally Jewish sororities at several schools that don't participate in formal.

On the other hand, I've never heard of a traditionally Christian sorority like KD opting out of formal recruitment. I don't think.

W&L Recruitment Results:

Bid Day was the 8th.

Quota was 20.

Pi Beta Phi took 22!

Quota was far lower this year because ADPi colonized. They were allowed to take up to total, which - AS FAR AS I KNOW - is still 70. Don't know their actual numbers, or the numbers of any other group besides my own.

I also found out that W&L is now using a quota range, by the way.

If a sorority is way under total and is having not the best luck in formal, yes, sometimes they do opt out - I've seen people talk about other chapters doing that on here. IMO it's not a good plan if they do want to get back into the swing of doing formal rush with all the other groups - it just feeds the rumor mill.

FWIW, I totally agree.

Thanks for the update on W&L, honeychile. Congrats and welcome to ADPi!

IMO, if they did up quota to 100 (it was at 70 the last time I was involved in W&L recruitment, as an alumna in 2006), it's high time they did - all the groups have been well above 70 for ages and ages.

Although - I'm assuming the 9 others are upperclassmen that they recruited from the fall. If the "quota" for ADPi was total, maybe total is still 70... dunno though.

I've gotta say I'm thrilled all the older groups made quota of 20. I was really worried that would not happen - it did not when KD colonized in 1997. So I am that everything has gone so well!!!

It can be dispiriting to be the group that fails at formal recruitment - and it makes it that much harder to be "up" for the new members you do get. I sincerely hope KD is able to COB some wonderful women and get up to total.

Hanover College Recruitment

Bid day was January 11
Quota was 14
Total is 68
Quota last year was 13

Alpha Delta Pi--14
Chi Omega--19
Kappa Alpha Theta--14
Phi Mu--17

This was the second year in a row that all four houses made quota. Before that, it had probably been ten years since all four made quota. COBs are still coming in, so the numbers will probably change. Phi Mu is the only house on campus at total at this time.
