Super Mario Brothers 2 was a western conversion of the Famicon Disk System game
Doki Doki Panic. The true sequel to Super Mario Brothers was considered to difficult for the western market so they took a pre-existing (easier) game and re-tooled the characters giving them a Super Mario makeover.
