Our excused policy is on a case-by-case basis. There are very few excuses allowed during Recruitment itself, but we're a bit more flexible with workshop week.

Summer term usually ends during our practice week before Recruitment starts. If this is a required class for your major, and/or a pre-req to another required course, and/or the course isn't offered every semester, then a member may be excused from workshop. She must show proof of these things. Something like Basket Weaving 101 isn't excused.

Internships are often set in stone with little to no flexibility on how long they last. We have to respect that. The same with studying abroad.

Jobs are a little more tricky, especially in this ever worsening economy with more and more students attending school on loans, scholarships, grants, and paying their own way. If it's a this summer only job, we expect members to be present during workshop. If the member is working at the job year round and especially if it is helping her to pay for membership, we don't want to jeopordize that. We ask that they provide a letter from their employer saying they have requested the time off and it is impossible to give. (Granted we assume an employer is honorable and honest.) But in these cases the job is presumably in town since it should continue during the school year and we expect them to attend workshop during their off hours.

Something else though, those members who are excused or unexcused are expected to contribute to the chapter in some other way to make up for their being absent when everyone else was working. Things such as helping to write Rec thank yous or some such.
