Hello Greek Chat!

I see some very good points here, and I would like to add a few observations from my own experience working with several chapters with rather diverse personalities.

“The easiest person to ask a question of is yourself.”

Start by asking yourself, ‘what sort of activities do I like to do in my spare time?”
‘What drew me to this fraternity in the first place?’
‘What sort of activities / attitudes would be attractive to people like me?’

I am not advocating recruiting exclusively PNM’s who are cookie cutter copies of yourself, but it is the easiest place to start.

I would go so far as taking fifteen minutes during your next chapter meeting to have each person tell what drew them to your chapter, and try and emulate that success with new PNMs.

I personally am a musician, and during formal rush, was very drawn to several houses that emphasized that they had house bands. If you play guitar, invite freshman to come jam.

If you play football, grab 5 guys, walk onto a freshman quad, and challenge some guys to a pick up game.

The method doesn’t matter nearly as much as the attitude.

Just like how an attractive girl can smell desperation a mile away, so can freshmen sense when a fraternity is begging for their interest. Do your best to keep rush events, whether formal or informal, as casual as possible. Focus on who you would like to have as a friend, not as a brother, and let the transition into brotherhood occur naturally.

I will continue to post briefs and articles both here and on my website as they come about, and please don’t hesitate to PM me with ideas or questions.

Hope I can help!
