My daughter pledged a sorority last year and has gotten me thinking about getting involved as an alumni. In fact, she seems to hang out a lot at my old fraternity at her school and is dating one of the critters. If they still had little sisters (it's a crime this tradition has been lost over Greek political correctness), she'd probably be one.

If these kids are anything like I was at the same age, this makes me nervous. I kind of feel like showing up at a chapter meeting, asking the assembled over-testosteroned, if they consider me their brother, and reminding them when the answer is in the affirmative that messing around with a brother's daughter is de facto dating a niece and unacceptable outside of Arkansas. The proper role is to watch over, guard, and protect the niece. I haven't done it, but boy is it tempting. Fortunately, my daughter is a really good kid.

Do I have life loyal status? Since I graduated. It means I get a quarterly magazine, donation requests with more frequency, and once had a paper certificate that I've long since lost.

Am I involved? Nope.

Would I get involved? Sure.

So why am I not involved? The nearby alumni chapters are either comprised entirely of guys from the same school or seem to keep their meeting dates and times a mystery. Scratch that.

The only alumni chapters that seem to meet with regularity are a haul away and meet during the day, adding lots of traffic delays (major metro area). It's a three hour commitment for lunch. Maybe I'll get motivated enough about the old fraternity to make a meeting some day when I'm in town and can carve out three free hours.
