Please dear Jesus, no Johnny Depp!!!!! Let us not ruin another movie with that craptastic actor.

Johnny Depp would be too conventional. Christopher Nolan is known for taking chances on actors who don't appear to make sense, but exceed expectations. Most people/critics were shocked when Heath Ledger was pegged as the Joker, but he was brilliant. (This is coming from my cousin, who works at DC Comics, but I agree with him.)

I think I liked Heath Ledger's joker better than Jack Nicholson's. Jack Nicholson played the joker as a funny character, because that's how it was written. Heath Ledger's Joker character was written to be a more serious role, not really a comedic role. I liked Heath Ledger's version better...he brought more "criminal" to the character.

But here's the critique most widely held: Why does Batman talk like the offspring of Clint Eastwood and a grizzly bear?

Though much of the voice effect is Bale's own doing, under the guidance of director Christopher Nolan and supervising sound editor Richard King, the frequency of his Batman voice was modulated to exaggerate the effect.

Critics and fans have noticed.

"His Batman rasps his lines in a voice that's deeper and hammier than ever," said NPR's David Edelstein.

Reviewing the film for MSNBC, Alonso Duralde wrote that Bale's Batman in "Batman Begins" "sounded absurdly deep, like a 10-year-old putting on an `adult' voice to make prank phone calls. This time, Bale affects an eerie rasp, somewhat akin to Brenda Vaccaro doing a Miles Davis impression."

I don't want a history of Batman's voice and a justification for the raspy lisp. I want jokes. Lots of jokes.
