Round two!!! Today we visited six houses and I was going to Goofy, Pluto, Mickey, Louie, Minnie and Dewey. Here’s how the night went:
Goofy: I met a few girls here I liked, but didn’t feel a strong connection with them. I noticed that two of the girls seemed to talk about the mixers they had with specific fraternities quite a bit. I didn’t know much about the fraternities at the time so it didn’t impress me much, maybe they thought that since I was a sophomore I would be since I learned later that the fraternities they mentioned were the more "popular" chapters with the sororities. A few girls in my group loved Goofy but I just wasn’t feeling it. Overall they were nice but I just didn’t see myself there.
Pluto: I was a little surprised to be invited back to Pluto. I saw Sara again and it was still awkward and fake. Although I did get to talk to a few other girls I knew who I really liked. They were rushing me really hard and Pluto was somewhat growing on me again. I decided it wouldn’t be the worst thing in the world if I ended up there, at least for preference.
Mickey: I looooooooooved Mickey’s party!!! It was really energetic but not so loud that my ear drums burst. I talked with a junior who was an officer. She was extremely classy and well put together and I was a little intimidated at first. But then we talked the whole time about our mutual love for a certain popular TV show (I won’t say which one or I’ll totally date myself!) which we were missing during the party. We both were embarrassed to love it so much and secretly watched it religiously. I really liked that she was so well put together but still relatable. I liked Mickey even more when I left and knew I would want to attend preference at Mickey.
Louie: Louie’s party was really fun. They had a video with labels of all the events they had the previous year. I did notice (since the girls at Goofy had pointed out which fraternities they socialized with) that Louie didn’t socialize with any of the same groups. I thought it was strange, but then again there were a lot of fraternities at my school at the time (considerably more than the sororities) so I didn’t give it too much thought. I met the president of Louie and thought she was really sweet. She seemed very smart and motivated which was typical for the sorority women at my school
but she was seriously motivated. She was pre-med and applying to medical schools with the goal of becoming a brain surgeon. I was really impressed that she had such a difficult major and still could manage her time well enough to be an officer in her chapter. I left liking Louie a lot more than I had previously, but I still wasn’t sure where they’d be on my ranking for the night.
Minnie: Minnie’s party was a little more subdued, but still really fun. They had a girl get up and talk about how supportive her sisters had been when she went through a difficult family tragedy. It sounds like a downer, but it really wasn’t. It was more of an uplifting story. They also showed a video. I talked for most of the party to a girl I hadn’t met before. She asked me if I had rushed the previous year and if not, why not. EEK. I didn’t know what to say. I sort of stumbled over my words and said something to the effect of "I went to a few spring rush parties and was invited to preference at Minnie but decided to wait until fall rush". I hoped that was a good explanation because she had kind of a strange look on her face. Did I divulge too much? I didn’t know!
Dewey: Oh Dewey, why do I have to do to Dewey? (I know, I was being bratty again!) I was so irritated after my Minnie flub that I had to go to Dewey. I asked my rush counselor if I had to go and she said that in order to follow the rules I had to attend all parties unless I was excused. So, I went to Dewey with the intentions of trying to get cut.....but I just couldn’t be rude. I felt so bad for those girls. None of the girls going into the party seemed happy to be there and there were some girls literally ignoring their rusher. It was just awful. I left knowing that I had been pleasant but that I was also probably going to see Dewey on my schedule again if one of my top three cut me!
So in my rankings that night I did the following:
1. Minnie, Mickey, Pluto
2. Goofy
3. Louie
4. Dewey
The next day I met with my rush counselor in the morning to get my schedule and saw:
1. Dewey
2. Mickey
3. No party
WHAT? I had been cut by Minnie and Pluto?????? My first thought was that Sara had something to do with it. I was partly horrified and partly wanted to cry. I was so happy Mickey was still on my list, but Dewey????????? My rush counselor was so understanding but she told me that I still had one house I really liked from the beginning and that I should really give Dewey a chance. At this point a LOT of girls had not been invited back to any houses, including a friend of mine from back home. She was devastated, even Dewey had released her (i know, not the most panhellenic statement but that was how she felt). I was not convinced I’d fall in love with Dewey but decided to focus on Mickey and try to be polite at Dewey’s party.
The parties started later on that day so I went back to my dorm to get ready. Evidently the chapters had also received their party lists because Sara emailed me asking (big rush violation!) what chapters I was going to because I wasn't on their list and she was wondering why. I was so annoyed I didn't write back. But at least I knew she (presumably) didn't do anything behind closed doors. I let her think I had cut Pluto and left it at that.
