I also see a girl in there who must have got a snap bid from KD because I talked to her mom on Wednesday or Thursday and she had been dropped from all houses.

I saw about 7 or 8 from Ohio and I must say that I'm surprised. Naturally, 3 were DZs.

bamamom4, Alpha Phi will be recruiting over the next couple of weeks. They have a link on the Panhellenic website. She would need to sign up for an interview. I know from my daughter that all of the other sororities have swaps already planned with Alpha Phi and they will certainly do homecoming and every other greek activity. They will be up and running within the next month. It would be a wonderful opportunity for her. They will be taking seniors, juniors, sophomores, and freshman.

Thanks for the info in Alpha Phi. I was wondering about the already established sororities. Would girls have another chance as upperclassmen?

They might. But I would not count on it - i.e. I wouldn't skip finding out about A Phi because one of the sororities that cut me as a freshman might give me a bid when I'm a sophomore.

Unless you know that the sorority she is interested in is far under total and needs to COB many women to get to total, I would urge her to check out this opportunity.

ETA - I got kind of dizzy reading this thread - did everyone make quota? Is everyone at total after that?

I believe the consensus was that everyone did make quota except Pi Phi and Gamma Phi. However, Pi Phi was only one under, so it's very possible they've already filled that position.

bamamom4, I must second everyone else who says your daughter should really check out Alpha Phi. I don't know if she was released from all chapters or she withdrew from recruitment because she wasn't happy with her options. It's my opinion that usually a woman's chances aren't terribly expanded as a sophomore - in other words, a house that didn't want her as a freshman probably isn't going to want her as a sophomore, except in some rare circumstances. If there are houses that were interested in her that she wasn't willing to consider, perhaps after a year at Alabama, she will reconsider and those houses might give her another look. However, sometimes chapters are insulted when a PNM basically refuses to join them - they can figure this out pretty easily.

Again, she should really check out Alpha Phi. It is her best option at this point.

Does anyone know when the COB/COR moratorium begins in order to allow Alpha Phi's colonization to move forward? If anyone is interested in Gamma Phi for example, they should move fast and speak to their recruitment counselor to see if COB would be an option there.

Didn't a similar thing happen to Gamma Phi last year? I could have sworn it did, and they were able to snap up more girls. It was a GREAT recruitment.

Yay for kk_bama and her chapter!

It's obvious from the numbers coming in that upperclassmen do rush and receive bids, but look at the numbers again -- only a few of them get bids per chapter.

I would encourage your daughter to at least check out Alpha Phi to increase her chances. I wouldn't rule them out just because they're new on campus.

Never ever did we, never ever would we have given a bid to someone we'd cut the year before...it isn't a snobbiness thing, or reluctance to give someone a second chance...it's just when you have hundreds of girls going through rush each year, if you've already eliminated one in the past, you have to trust your judgment that you made the right decision then, so there is no point in wasting time and invites on re-evaluating the PNM's fit with your house. I'm sure there are exceptions, but I would bet that this is by and large the way things go. Now if a freshman girl cut a house early on in the process...like after the first round...and then rushed again her sophomore year, I am willing to bet that some houses might give her another chance, since we all know how hard it is to pick which houses to cut after just one round. Someone in each house WILL remember that she went through the year before...some houses might hold a grudge, and if she cut the house later on in the process, then almost certainly she won't get invited back, but she might have an outside chance at a house she cut at a very early stage, if she does well her freshman year and has great grades and activities.

But as everyone says, the Alpha Phi thing is a wonderful opportunity, and she should consider trying to get an invitation to join there....nationals usually are very careful to select top, top girls to be the first group of New Members, so she probably will end up with a stellar PNM group, and certainly there will be much more fanfare around everything than she would get with another house...

Agreed. Plus, getting to be a founding member is a unique opportunity that very few girls have. From what it sounds like (I'm nowhere near Bama so I really have no clue, except from GC), she won't really be missing anything either. They have a house and a chance to live in it right away. The bookstore already has A-Phi items avaliable. Swaps are being planned so they can participate in Homecoming and Greek Week.

Will it be more work than joining an established sorority? Undoubtedly. But will it be her best chance: probably. There's no reason this can't be one of the best experiences of her life, bamamom4. They'll have loads of support from the National Office, the Greek Community at her school, and alums.

I think it's worth a shot.

Some of the new Alpha Phis will also have the opportunity to move right into the chapter's house. University housing has agreed to release the girls from their housing contracts if they live in the dorms so they can move into the house. That is very unusual.
