I am a longtime lurker but have never posted before, but your KSU thread caught my eye. I went through recruitment at KSU back in 90s with similar thoughts as you. I was the first greek in my family, had no idea what I was doing, and not quite sure if it was for me. But I decided if nothing else it would be a good way to meet people before classes started. Then, as it is now, while K-State is competitive, all of the houses are quite strong and no one is too hung up on the idea of top tier houses. In my own experience, I was cut from a few houses, but got to do most of the cutting and had a full schedule each day. By the day before prefs, I could honestly say that I would have been comfortable in any of the 5 houses I had left. I was fortunate to get a bid from the house that had been my top choice throughout the week, but I still a bit concern that maybe this wasn't for me, and I decided I'd at least stick it out through initiation. Flash forward and I was eventually president of my chapter and am a highly active alum. My best friends in the house are truly like family to me. (I am 35 and we still e-mail each other every day!). And while I did have friends from home who went through rush the same year as me and did not get bids or dropped out of recruitment, they were very few or had their heart set on one house. Yet in the end they didn't regret going through recruitment and went on to have great college experiences. And in recent years, K-State has improved efforts to make sure as many girls get bids as possible. The bottom line, is just making connections before classes start gives you a great advantage at college from the start no matter the outcome. But if you have recs, have the grades, keep and open mind and best yoru best foot forward during recruitment, you will most likely find yourself a sorority home in Manhattan. Good luck!

Thank you so much for the advice and encouragement! Like I said, I won't be heartbroken if I don't get a bid. I just wanted to make sure that the whole recruitment experience would still be worth it even if I didn't make it into a house. I don't really see what I have to lose though. The only thing I don't have going for me are recs.....

First, I should say that recs at K-State aren't mandatory, but they do help immensely. I was lucky that my hometown panhellenic alumnae association was very active and they helped all local girls going through recruitment at various schools to get recs. I assume you are in Kansas. Depending where you are, your closest panhellenic alumnae group may do the same thing. If not, you can begin by asking women you know who are alums and at least have a good start.
