No, I was fired. They sited tardiness, absenteeism, and poor performance. In my defense, they had come to me with these issues a month ago and I had improved vastly but I guess it wasn't enough to keep my job. From what I heard about the person in my job before me, she did all their work for them and essentially spoiled them, so when I wasn't doing all their work for them, I appeared lazy. It's ok, I didn't like my job anyway. I just wanted to get out when I was ready and I wish I had had more warning than 2:30 on a Friday afternoon. Truth be told, I had already started looking But there's the whole issue of money that's kinda kicking my ass right now... living paycheck to paycheck sucks.

And BTW, I'm not close enough to Atlanta to commute there. Augusta or Aiken anyone...?

That sounds a lot like what happened to me. My boss gave me a review telling me all the things I needed to improve. This was like in june. So in August, I sat down with her and her boss to see if I had made any improvement. She said that it was too early to tell. Then in September after working the whole day, I was fired. All this happened in 2005,but it seems like it was just yesterday.

Have you applied for unemployment? if you haven't, do so first thing Monday.

Fired: oh yes
I worked in the news media, it can be very political, in terms of favoring a cause/issue. I worked for a small daily paper a few years, excellent reviews, raises. What I didn't know when I was hired is how tight the editor and police chief were. The police department became the target of a state investigation for brutality of prisoners over many years. The paper tried to ignore the story, I'd become a squeaky wheel saying we can't be doing this; kind of like ignoring an elephant in the room. Our nearest competition rarely covered the community, but got wind of the investigation and that the paper I worked for hid it. So, my paper decided to cover the story. By then, my and their credibility was shot. What the paper I worked for first tried to do is go after those who led investigators to be brought in. That's when my resumes started going out in mass.
The management started looking for people to blame because it was hard to get anyone to take the paper seriously, so the staff became targets.
My next review, I went from a valuable asset to a troublemaker. I was given 2 weeks to stop whatever I was doing wrong, with only a vague answer as to what it was.
When I was fired I just laughed at my boss.
I went on to work for a larger company, and later heard I described as one of the paper's "success" stories.
And the management: the paper was bought a few years later by the competition and it fired the management.
Two other papers I worked for closed. I am changing careers.

This has happened to me, but it didn't lead to being fired.

Long story short, I was hired to be a Development person for a job -- basically writing grant proposals, processing donations, etc. I also had some programming work and some administrative work. Well, the first two months were almost entirely administrative and it became apparent that my boss had (essentially) hired me under false pretenses -- he really wanted a receptionist but knew he wouldn't be able to find one that also had proposal writing chops. He also gave me ZERO training, so although I was doing the work, he wasn't teaching me what had greater priority than other things. ALSO, I had to get his personal mail from his PO Box and do other things that weren't directly work related.

Things worked out, but I heard MUCH later that the guy was badmouthing me to my peers and saying he didn't think I would work out. wtf?

I ended up getting a new supervisor who gives me more creative freedom, more opportunities to talk about my progress, and is basically grooming me for management. The Lord works in mysterious ways.

I don't know what you do, but if Savannah's not too far away and you're any kind of engineer? My husband's company's hiring. Oh, and mine is too, if you wanna do a gig in retail ...
