You know, the mother is a calculating bitch.
BUT, I feel sorry for a six-year-old who thought she won something only to have it taken away because her mom is a dumb fuck.
As far as I am concerned, the company sponsoring the contest is just covering its ass for its own stupidity. The essay was either 1) NOT the best one, but they gave it to her just because of the political angle or 2) was the best one they received and she won it fair and square.
They should have done their homework to make sure they were giving the prize to someone who had a true essay if they were so concerned about the validity of the essay. They are at fault, too.
They should not have to check out the stories. But, we all know there are lying sacks of shit in this world.
And, although the spirit of the contest might have been broken, the rules were not. She won. Maybe under a veil of impropriety... But, she won according to the rules.
Like I said, I feel sorry for the little girl who thought she had won this contest. She only did what she was told by her mom. But, in the end, she's the one paying for this.

In regards to the essay, I don't think it could have been THAT good. That has been in the news a lot b/c its in the DFW area. The news aired a public apology from the mom not too long ago, and they had a camera shot of the "essay" submitted by the girl.
It was like 2 sentences. Something like "I'm really sad because my dad was serving the country and died in Iraq a couple of weeks ago".
When I was school, an essay was a few paragraphs long

See, that's what I've been thinking. The company saw a good pr angle, gave her the prize, and got its ass handed back when it all came out.

^^^ I agree.
They wanted to use that "essay" to show how "nice" they were and it did backfire since it wasn't true (which they never specified). And then they couldn't go onto news and tv outlets and boast about their good deed so they outed her. Granted, I know that the mom should be punished, but at the end of the day, the kid suffers & Hannah Montana tickets are hard to come by. We all know that wasn't an essy...it was barely a sentence. She shouldn't have won based on a 2 sentence sob story either way.

The mother was truly at fault. She's teaching her child to lie in order to get things dishonestly. Good for the contest promoters for taking away the tickets. At least the child will learn that there are consequences to dishonesty. A hard lesson, but an important one.

An English teacher speaks . . .
In my class, an essay had to be at least 5 paragraphs long (intro, body, conclusion). A paragraph had to contain at least 3 sentences. So, near as I can tell, she didn't even write a paragraph.
(I always told my students who complained of having to write a specified amount that they did not yet have "poetic license" - they had a learner's permit which required rules (!))

She was 6 years old. Assuming that the was the target audience, how good did they expect the essay to be? And in reality, almost anything in that age range is going to be written by a parent for the kid.
