If whatever it is is linked to the original, seriously what is the problem?

There isn't one unless one of those companies has an attorney who wore his wife's underwear by mistake. I'd rather see the list reposted with an appropriate citation than Mr. Cagle posting the links.

Definitely agree.

And legally, aren't you allowed to post a whole article as long as you cite where it came from? Kinda like when you cite things when writing a paper for class. I could be wrong, but this is what I always thought.

No, I don't think so. I think there's a difference between academia and the rest of the world.

You bring up a good point, though. Is it legal to post an entire article, as oppossed to a quote or quotes, even in an academic paper?

Again, not being a lawyer, I'm not sure of the answer -- only of my understanding of the situation.

The Copyright laws can be pretty confusing -- especially concerning fair use.

This is, IMHO, the best reply and answer in this tread:

The chance of the "copyright police" looking here are pretty slim (as in almost non-existent), but it would be better to post a link.

That's really true of anything protected under the copyright laws.

The following is a post from the board administrator:

"Do not post any copyrighted material unless the copyright is owned by you or you have permission from the copyright owner. This has been part of the site rules since these forums were started.

If you are posting a news article it is fine to post an excerpt/summary along with a link to the full article on the news publication's website."

In reality, most of us have broken that rule/law, but we really shouldn't.
John posted it for some reason. So perhaps we should all try to follow it.

As for the possible reason(s) the John put that into the TOS for GC:
Here are a few educational links that one could click on for more details:
http://www.ivanhoffman.com/fair.html
http://www.bitlaw.com/copyright/fair_use.html
http://fairusenetwork.org/reference/freeexpip.php
http://www.copyright.gov/fls/fl102.html
http://fairuse.stanford.edu/Copyrigh...er9/index.html
http://fairuse.stanford.edu/

Even the above are not all to clear.

I was told/taught that the best thing to do in an open, web site was to write a very short, very brief, very simple into and then provide the link to site.

And as this site is not only open to all but also open to spiders, this is what I do.

Any other questions, please PM me.

Now, let us all get back to the original thread
