Side hugs around the shoulder--yes. Side hug around the waist--questionable  . I'm not labeling anybody but I've never seen it happen among straight friends. You decide.

On a related note, the president of my university gave me a side-hug one time. It was very quick. "Affectionate" in a platonic sense but not erotic -- ya know?

Agreed.
Why am I suddenly seeing in my mind's eye that scene from the Will & Grace where Matt Damon (as Owen) is trying to pass as gay so he can beat Jack out for a spot in the Gay Men's Chorus and go on a trip to Europe, while Jack is trying to "in" him:
Jack: Oh, interesting. You gave me the straight-guy, double-pat-on-the-back, no-hip-contact hug.
Owen: Actually it was more the gay-guy, bend-at-the-waist, feel-your-delts, check-out-your-shoes hug.
