Delayed Rush
Does anyone agree that Ole Miss has really made things difficult by moving rush after school starts? I attended Ole Miss Homecoming this weekend, and the sororities and fraternities were EXHAUSTED between midterms, rush, and Homecoming! This is going to not only hurt rush but also the university's enrollment if they don't move the date for rush. I really think it needs to be MOVED BACK...before school starts. Thoughts/comments?

It doesn't seem to be hurting anything. In fact, if anything it helps some PNMs by letting them get to know people. Why would this hurt the enrollment of a major university???

I never did like the delayed rush. I rushed when rush was before school and prefer that. If they don't want to hold rush before school anymore for whatever reasons they have, then I would prefer deferred rush. Holding rush in the middle of the semester, especially when midterms are going on, is almost cruel! They are punishing about 1/3 of their student population unduly.

It was delayed when I rushed. I always viewed it as though there will always be things in my life that coincide with school/midterms. If being in a sorority was something I wanted to do, I knew I had to be adult enough to figure out how to better manage my available time.
I sure didn't make my college decisions based on recruitment dates.

Exhaustion is just part of going to school, and it is part of going through life. Take a deep breath and let your daughter select her school based on her education needs rather than on when recruitment is scheduled.

I wouldn't expect anyone to make their college enrollment decisions based on recruitment dates, but it does seem to me that having sorority recruitment while classes weren't also going on would be better. If you wanted to have deferred, it seems like it would be better moved until after finals in the fall semester. I was looking up the academic calendar and finals end on December 7th, I think; couldn't it be after that for a week?
ETA: I'm not saying that college kids shouldn't have to learn how to do social stuff and classes at the same time, just that SEC sorority rush is pretty exhausting, and it might be easier on everyone to do it on a school break.

I know that at Arkansas, they moved rush into September to increase/retain enrollment. They used to have it before school started, and if some PNMs didn't get the sorority they wanted, they actually transferred schools, costing the University enrollment. It happened often enough that the chancellor demanded that recruitment be moved after classes started.
I am NOT a fan of large recruitments after school starts, but I wanted to point out that there apparently is an argument that delaying recruitment actually helps enrollment.
