I think Meredith told her sister that b/c she knows how they can be. Remember, the mother was so determined to be a stepmother to Meredith and try to "fix/repair" the relationship with her father. I don't think Mer wanted to go there again. We can tell with Derrick that she can't let anyone close to her.
