If any sororities told Panhellenic "NO" , we could go back to the houses providing refreshments, letting the rushees stay long enough to get to know the house, getting rid of the anonymity, and quit pretending it doesn't matter which house as long as you get a pin.

It really wouldn't work like that.

Okay, seriously. I know you think the way it was when you went through was the Best and Only Way to Join A Sorority, but colleges and universities AND the women entering them have changed immensely in the past 30-40 years (or so I'm guessing the length of time it's been since you've graduated.)

Give it a rest already. Practically every single post you've made has been commenting (either straightforward or obtusely) at how much better it was back then. Things aren't going to go back to the way it was and most likely will continue to evolve and change as the needs of universities, chapters and women change.

Actually, given your age and your interests (as provided in your profile) I'm extremely surprised you joined a sorority at all. After all, they aren't the first thing that comes to mind when you think of political activism and in the '70s were still probably seen as part of The Establishment.

Ok, so your profile says you were initiated in 1974 which means you are younger than my mom - when she was in college, recruitment did not allow for the rushees to stay at the house forever, they still were timed parties. What anonymity are you referring to? And, it does matter what house you join, but using GO GREEK enthusiasm rather than "RAHRAHMYSORORITYISTHEBESTERESTESTEVER!" means that more girls will be interested in recruitment as an idea, rather than recruitment to join one house and one house only. Nobody forces girls to stay in if they hate their invitations.

You said on here you had 20 people in your chapter. I'm assuming that rush at your school was far from competitive. In that environment, everyone does get to know each other better at rush.

When you have to meet 1000 WOMEN and choose a pledge class, then we'll see how down you are with letting the rushees stay there for days on end.

Oh, and refreshments? Are you REALLY complaining about this? Do you really want a rushee to pledge your chapter because your food was the best?

Seriously. See the thread on dumb reasons you cut or accepted a particular chapter. Most of us can look back and admit our 17-20 year old brain made some absolutely stupid decisions with no actual basis...

I like variety. I see the good and the potential in everyone. I'm happy with my GLO, but I don't have to use subtle or overt snobbery to make myself feel good or tear anybody else down. I think most Greeks at heart, feel the same way.

I agree that refreshments shouldn't be the focus of recruitment, but let's be honest, isn't there something to be said for being able to have the recruitment party you want to have?

There's nothing wrong with having soft drinks and cute desserts (or whatever you want to have other than drugs and alcohol.) And we can all think of stupid restrictions that we've heard about. My all time favorite is still the ban on using glasses that "referenced" alcohol, no matter what was served in them.

Sure, there might be a cost savings to the chapter not to do it, but some of the biggest recruitments still do have refreshments, and honestly how could you expect girls to rush from dawn to dark without food?

I'm not against "frilly" rush, but when I see chapters talking about things like $10,000 worth of gold fabric to cover the walls, or catered meals that cost a similar amount, well, you have to draw the line somewhere. The fact that that money could be used for the sorority's philanthropy - or hey, for a scholarship for a girl who'd be a great sister but can't afford dues - is what bugs me.

I was more responding to DGTess acting like no refreshments has been the downfall of the Greek system, or that the omission of them has a thing to do with bid matching or trying to keep things on a level playing field Panhellenically. (It doesn't.) I guess the thing is that her posts don't make sense to me, as she says that her chapter was never above 20 people and so (even in the 70s) I doubt it was a chapter with a frilly Southern type rush. I think we're all trying to help her understand that however she was rushed, it wasn't typical, even back then.
