Sweethearts are chosen by the fraternity or sorority actives. It is a huge honor. It can be a boyfriend/girlfriend of a member but not always. At any rate it's always someone who has gone above and beyond the call to support the organization. They usually get asked to formals, date parties etc (if their significant other isn't a member anyway).
