They've mentioned a few times that Cyprus-Rhodes (talk about a Greek name) is in Ohio, but the campus buildings definitely have a California look to them. According to
IMDb, the show is filmed in LA and at UNC-Chapel Hill, though I can't say I've recognized any shot of Chapel Hill. (Perhaps they just went there for some second unit shots?)

Perhaps for the same reason that the Omega Chi and Kappa Tau pledge pins and, judging from the other night, badges look almost exactly alike and are worn on collars and lapels rather than in the usual spot on a shirt. Accuracy can take a hit in Hollywood.
Seriously, though, it used to be fairly common, at least on some campuses, for pledging (it was called that then) to occur in the fall and initiation to happen early in the spring semester. Apparently, judging from KDAngel's post, that still happens in some places.
