Yeah, I knew they were illegal in Cali, and until '94, they were illegal in Michigan, too. It stems from the fact that the Old Powers-That-Be in congress won't recognize the fact that ferrets are not wild. They think making ferrets legal will have the potential to introduce a new feral species, which California doesn't need. Thing is, ferrets can't survive more than three days in the wild, due to their trustful nature. They are 100% domesticated.... There are even Egyptian tombs where ferrets are painted on the walls, and mummified...
I've already written letters, hoping to get them legalized, and I feel that within 5 years, they will be. There have already been several bills that have passed through one house, only to be votoed by another. I figure, when the old farts get out of there, the newbies will be a bit more creative in what laws they pass!
By the way, I, too, have the 2002 Ferret Calendar! ^^
