Day 3
Phone rang this morning at 6:50 -- UGADaughter's happy voice told her mom that she is visiting 12 houses today for house tours, including all 8 of her first round favorites. I heard UGAMom telling her to "keep an open mind" and saying lots of other good stuff. So far so good, but prepared for pain later in the process! She told her mom it will be a long day but she will try to check in late tonight.
MamaDawg -- good luck to your daughter -- sorry about the roommate stuation. Maybe RoomateDawg is just very shy and will open up to DaughterDawg soon.
NUBlue&Blue -- good luck to your friends -- sounds like a special group of girls. And good luck to southernpromise -- thanks for doing a recruitment story.
Hope everyone's day goes well.

From 12 to 6...
Well, my phone rang early a.m. also....my dearest baby was invited back to 6 houses (two were at the bottom of her bottom five), but thankfully the other four were at the top of her list We were sad that she was cut from one house that she really enjoyed (and it was special...I went to prefs there, too!). Anyway, she was cut from that one (but we had no rec there....Knew no one. I should have done a better job) Today, we are scrambling to see if any last minute recs can go into two of those four where we also have no recs...
Yes, I hope we will have a new AXO legacy, too, but I know that you never know. When I was in school, we automatically invited back the legacy to round two to give her the benefit of getting better acquainted. But, if we were going to cut her, we had to do so after that round in order to allow her to have a chance to form a relationship elsewhere....is it still that way?

UGADad - Good luck to your daughter! Also, good luck to everyone else's daughters, friends, and family going through recruitment both at UGA and at other schools!
This is my first recruitment story time on GC and I'm pretty much loving it already, LOL.
UGADad - quick question for you - you mentioned that your daughter was an out-of-state freshman? Do you mind asking what part of the country she is from? Just wondering as I will be an out-of-stater next fall during recruitment as well...not 100% which university I will be at yet, but it will definitely be an SEC school.

Day 3 --- UGA Recruitment
UGADad, first of all, thank you for starting this thread. We are first timers to the sorority experience at UGA too. I pledged a sorority YEARS ago but for financial reasons, didn't go through the final initiation process, and there were only 5 sororities on this particular campus. So I know a little bit of what to expect and how to give encouragement and support.
Our daughter is a freshman living in Brumby. She has met so many wonderful young ladies all at this point are going through Rush. Saturday and Sunday was fun, exciting and very tiring. We drove back through Athens Sunday night to have dinner with her. She was exhausted! She was happy about the houses and the girls that she had met.
We wait anxiously to hear about her day today. So, updates to come.
Good luck to all the young ladies going through Rush at UGA.

Why does the Greek Life office do this to people????
Yes, technically it is the obligation of the group members to find a recommendation for a PNM that they are interested in, but in a recruitment as large as UGA, you don't want to count on it.
Greek Life finally made some progress and put this in the Pointer, the recruitment magazine, but they need to quit sabotaging the people who know the least about UGA rush.
Sure, if you decided at the last minute to go through recruitment, you might get by at some groups because they have alumnae networks and would get you one. Other places who have hundreds of glowing recommendations on other PNMs, not so much.
If at all possible, get at least one rec for every group at any SEC recruitment and at many other big recruitments.

I wish someone would have told me this!!!! I just finished recruitment and actually quit before prefs because I only had one house who asked me to prefs. I almost wish I stayed because seeing all the girls in their bid day t-shirts makes me so sad! I always imagined I would join a sorority, but no one in my family ever has, so I am not a legacy. I met a few KD girls last year and was even told by them that i would "definitely" get in-- i had my hopes up and was cut by KD second round.
Does anyone know about UGA's spring recruitment?? Or how the sororities feel about sophmores who rush?

Very few houses participate in spring recruitment and typically they have very few slots available. However, some houses may be COBing to total within the next couple of weeks. You should call the Greek Life office to make sure you are on the COB list so they can contact you. If you don't get called for COB, then call the Greek Life office when you get back in January to see if any houses will be having informal spring rush.
It can be hard for a sophomore to get a bid without friends in the houses, stellar grades, and campus involvement. Different chapters feel differently about sophomores, though... some will extend bids to sophomores and for others it's pretty much unheard of.

Hi PNM, I pledged Gamma Phi in the spring of 1999. I loved it - it was so much more relaxing and "real" than fall rush. The way it works is that not every house participates in spring rush. If the sorority does not reach quota in the fall or happens to have new members drop out, then they may participate in spring rush and accept whatever number will allow them to keep a full membership. I believe those are the only reasons the sorority would do spring rush, but correct me if I'm wrong.
I will be honest, the very traditional sororities are sometimes known to penalize sophmores because rush is so competitive and it's just one more reason they can use to further the process of elimination. However, that's not to say that if you happened to become friends with women in a particular group or groups and were interested in being recruited by those houses, those genuine connections and friendships would most certainly help you out.
I hope this helps. Feel free to holler if you have other questions.

I am very sorry if, in fact, KD sisters told you this. This is very much against NPC rules, and I am very disappointed that they would say this to you. I hope your future Greek experience goes well for you, though!!! Please do not take this as a common experience from the KD sisterhood.

UGADaughter is also in Brumby, and she thinks it is great that all those freshman girls can be in the dorm together sharing experiences and making new friends. But NonUGASon, who helped us move UGADaughter in on Friday, was the most impressed with Brumby. He had quite an enjoyable day on Friday -- helping little sister has never been so much fun for him!

All of my daughter's friends are in Brumby, too. I put it in another thread, but her very best friend and very close friend (they're roommates) both got 12 invites; another friend got 10; another friend got 6 and two others got 3. (Haven't heard about the two sophs trying again).
Keep your fingers crossed, I have a couple of posts in that thread you read about last year that discusses the disappointing rush the girls from our HS experienced. I'm hoping for better turnout this year.

I'll bet nonUGASon enjoyed helping little sister moving into Brumby and checking out all her new classmates

Another UGA mom
My daughter is also going through rush at UGA - got invited back to 12 today, but her best friend only got invited to six. Two of the houses she had multiple recs for did not invite her back, but the ones she liked best are still on her list. She is a legacy, and I am also wondering if it is still true that if a legacy comes to prefs they are automatically on the first list. Does this vary from one GLO to another.

I think it varies, but the legacy member could easily review the policy maybe on the national website, I think.

Shadden,
You're not likely to get an answer on the legacy rules for each sorority. Membership decisions are private and not discussed on GC. You'll find that legacy considerations vary widely by sorority and chapter.
