NYC is about 2.5 hours. Philadelphia about an hour. Any place over 2 or so hours away and I would probably get a hotel room for the night. That way I can sample some spirirts while hanging out

For me it would definitely have to be an overnight stay. It's a 4 1/2 hr. drive.
I know a cheap hostel in NYC on 45th reight next to Times Square (4 bed dorm rooms, 33 bucks/pers.). The only thing as James says is: Parking in the City sucks.
You NJ people, were would be a good park and ride station??
