Georgia Question

Welp.... I'm still bored, so I have another question

- For anyone in or near the University of Georgia.

I have been reading all the stories about the housing situation there. I believe early this year the Georgia chapter was to decide if they were going to take the universities offer to lease a house built and maintained by the university.... Or build their own house off campus.

Anything come of that?

hrmm.. I may have found the answer in this story (as of 11/1/06):

Quote:
In its Oct. 3 fax, Sigma Nu wrote it intended to continue negotiations to execute a lease within 90 days.

I bet it is hard as hell to come to an agreement with the University that covers all the fraternity and universities concerns and makes everyone happy.

A fire in June 1996 and subsequent fire code violations forced Sigma Nu from its original River Road house.
I think that was this house that burned:

This sounds promising:

The fraternity has 50 new pledges this fall and holds its chapter meetings in the Student Learning Center, he said.
Story is from 8/30/06. I hope they get a house soon... That will definitely help to ensure their longevity success.

I live about 20 minutes from UGA and here is the info that I know.

In the early 1990's there was a fire in the chapter house (pictured in this thread). It caused $2mil in damage to the house and the members had to move out. Chapter was going to fix the damage but when the house was inspected if failed structurally. The chapter owned the house but not the land, land was a 99 year lease from campus. The chapter was going to rebuild the house on that site but the land lease was set to expire in 20 years and the chapter wanted to renew the land lease but the university wouldn’t do it b/c it was trying to run all the fraternities off of River Rd to make their own non-frat development.

So without a house the chapter struggle to survive and died out by 2003 (about the same time that I moved to this area, I couldn’t find any active guys). Charter was not pulled and the chapter was in good standing.

In 2003 the Alumni of MU Chapter finally settled its business with UGA and sold the house to them, which they quickly bulldozed along with the ATO house and another house on River Rd with they had acquired using similar methods.

In 2005 the Mu Chapter Alumni and Nationals re-started the active chapter without housing and made some head way.

In late 2006 they purchased and moved into small but adequate house on Meigs St, to house the chapter while they constructed a mansion to rival the old one on river rd.

But days after the purchase of the house on Meigs St the Athens City Govt passed several laws basically prohibiting new fraternity and sorority houses in the city.

So UGA tried to run the fraternities off River Rd (which is on campus) and the City Govt said NOT SO FAST, I don’t think so. And UGA is now trying to move Sigma Nu and others back to River Rd.

Note: only about 6-7 fraternity houses were on river rd in the 1990s, UGA had that number down to 3 as of 2006.

What's the deal with UGA trying to take control over greek life at the school? That sounds like a horrible situation to me...

UGA

Sorry to crash your thread...I know most of the UGA Sigma Nu's and a few of my family members were Sigma Nu's at UGA...

Michael Adams, the president of UGA, hates greeks. Why? We don't know. Maybe he didn't get a bid from Sigma Nu, who knows.

Yes, the picture of the white house is the former UGA Sigma Nu house. The brothers currently live in an off-campus house and will be moving soon to a new house on River Road (where the old house was).

I'm happy for them. They have grown into a wonderful chapter in the past couple of years and I am very lucky to call them my friends. Y'all can definately be proud of your Mu Chapter!

Awesome. Thanks for the info !

Can't wait to see the house design - being Georgia, I'd put money on it being the classic, white, with pillars design.

They built the same thing in Oklahoma.... OU and Tulsa's house were pretty similiar in design. VERY 50's/60's looking.
