Okay okay! Sorry everyone . . . work has been going a little crazy and I haven't had time to type an update. But I’m back now and ready to break the silence!
The morning of bid day, I woke up extremely nervous. Over night I had realized that I really only wanted a bid from Matt Leinart and knew that I would be very disappointed if I opened my bid card and it said something different. Megan, Kate, and I went to get some breakfast but we were unable to eat anything. We headed back to our dorm to wait for the time to meet the rho chis. We had heard that we would get a phone call if we hadn’t been matched with anyone and we wanted to be close to the phone so we could hope it wouldn’t ring! As the time drew closer to go with the rest of the rushees to get our bids, we were getting more and more excited. We had been told to dress casually, in jeans, shorts, or comfy skirt, because we would be getting a bid day shirt to change into.
All of the rushees met in the same area to go get their bids. We would all get them and then the rho chis would do their reveal and lead us back to our new homes to get the party started.
Megan went in first and came out screaming . . . she was a happy new Matt Leinart.
Kate was next and came out skipping . . . she was a proud new member of Mike Williams.
I was the last one to go. My heart was beating SO incredibly hard as I walked into the meeting room. My rho chi had a weird look on her face and she tentatively handed me my bid card. Her look made me worried and I was close to tears. I opened my bid card and it read
. . .
Matt Leinart!!!!!!! also known as . . . .
DELTA DELTA DELTA
I started jumping up and down screaming . . . I was ecstatic. I knew that I had finally found my home and I couldn’t wait to meet my new sisters. My rho chi told me that she had looked worried because the last time I had seen her I had been favoring Mike Williams, and she was concerned I would be disappointed. I happily reassured her that Tri-Delta was the perfect home for me.
I ran outside to my friends and shared the news. We gave each other huge hugs and then Kate went off to meet the new Mike Williams and Megan and I headed over to meet the new Tri-Deltas.
Just a little PS to the story. Kate was kind of annoyed with me when she came back from her bid day. It turns out that a bunch of the Mike Williams actives ran up to her when she got to the house and demanded to know what house I had joined and why I hadn’t chosen to join their house. They wanted to know “what had gone wrong” because “they were positive that I would join their house.” One girl even asked Kate if she thought there could have been a mistake with the bid matching. Needless to say, this dampened Kate’s spirits some on bid day and was very unfair to her. It also made the our friendship a little strained.
Also . . . Kate ended up dropping out of Mike Williams in her sophomore year and then leaving the school. The point of this is, if you are a PNM going through recruitment with other girls you are friends with, make sure to make your own choices because you never know what choices those friends will make and you could be left at a sorority that wasn’t really right for you.
And . . . I happily lived in Tri-Delta for three years and enjoyed every moment of being there. Right now I’m busy getting fitted for all of the bridesmaid dresses I had to order for my sisters’ weddings. I might have been a tomboy and a little worried about fitting in when I started rush, but now I really do have a group of great friends that I still rely on for a lot of things, even if we live hours apart from each other!
